‘Quick Wins’: Dubai rolls out summer traffic upgrades at 28 locations to improve road flow
Projects target schools, communities and major transport corridors
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started implementing a series of traffic ‘Quick Wins’ across 28 locations in Dubai between July and September 2026.
The initiative focuses on improving road network efficiency, enhancing safety levels and supporting smoother movement as Dubai continues to experience urban and population growth. The targeted works cover key areas including school zones, residential communities and major development corridors.
The projects include improvements at four school-related locations, three development areas and 21 other locations across Dubai. Scheduled during the summer holiday period, the works aim to take advantage of lower traffic volumes, speed up completion and minimise disruption for road users.
Major upgrade
One of the key projects under the programme is the expansion of Emirates Road, which includes adding two new lanes across a 5 km stretch extending from the emirate of Sharjah towards Al Amardi Street. The improvement reflects the importance of Emirates Road as a major route connecting Dubai with neighbouring emirates and handling significant traffic volumes, particularly during peak hours.
The expansion is expected to reduce congestion and shorten journey times by 25% during peak periods along the corridor. The project forms part of RTA’s efforts to enhance capacity on high-demand routes and improve connectivity between different parts of Dubai and surrounding areas.
Additional traffic improvements are being carried out at several important intersections and roads, including Trade Centre Street and Marasi Drive in Business Bay, Latifa Bint Hamdan Street near Al Quoz Industrial Area, and Ras Al Khor Road towards Al Khail Road. The works are designed to improve intersection performance, increase road efficiency and support smoother vehicle movement in areas experiencing rising traffic activity.
Quick Wins
The Quick Wins programme also includes upgrades around residential communities to improve accessibility and reduce traffic pressure. At the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Al Amardi Street, a new lane is being added to increase capacity. On Ras Al Khor Road towards Dubai-
Al Ain Road, the right-turn movement is being expanded from one lane to two, while Algeria Street in Al Mizhar 4 will receive an additional traffic lane before the labour accommodation entrance.
These improvements are aimed at reducing queues, improving vehicle circulation and creating more efficient movement patterns across local roads.
School zones
As part of preparations for the upcoming academic year, RTA is also introducing improvements around educational facilities. New parking spaces are being developed for Zayed Educational Complex in Al Mizhar 2, while additional parking capacity is being provided for Horizon International School in Umm Al Sheif.
The measures are designed to organise vehicle movement, support smoother pick-up and drop-off operations and reduce congestion during school peak hours.
The selection of locations for the traffic upgrades is based on detailed technical assessments and field studies. RTA uses historical traffic data, survey findings, intelligent transport systems and surveillance camera information to identify areas requiring improvements.
Public feedback and suggestions received through various communication channels are also considered when planning solutions, helping RTA deliver targeted measures that enhance traffic flow, reduce travel times and improve mobility experiences across Dubai.
